The National
Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) also called The Recording
Academy is the organization responsible for the prestigious Grammy Awards. Also
noted as the premier awards for the music industry. However, The Recording Academy
is not only about the Grammy Awards and has many components to it. Some of
these components are, MusicCares and The Grammy Foundation are not-for-profit
wings of The Recording Academy and helps musicians in need of emergency
financial assistance, health fairs and preventative clinics for music who have
fallen on hard time and struggle with substance abuse. The Foundation help to
educate promote and teach kids of potential careers in the music industry. The
Recording Academy also acts as advocate for "songwriter, studio
professionals, artist and other music makers before congress. (Grammy365, 2013)
Their lobbying efforts help the "FCC decision allocating two channels
dedicated to wireless microphones in every market in the country."The organization is currently headed by Neil Portnow,who was a musician himself and hails from Great Neck, NY.
They provided on going support and
networking opportunities for their members. Through the Producers &
Engineers wing, there is support for music and recording arts education. Grammy
U – provides support for students who are perusing careers in the music
industry. The Recording Academy has twelve chapters strategically located all
over the entire United States to serve its members. There are three membership
levels: Voting membership, Associate membership and Student membership, there
is four ways in which one can become a voting member.
Membership in The Recording Academy has
several exclusivity that are geared to industry professionals; this includes
discounts on goods, services and other tools. Discount on travel from
Enterprise, Dave El and Ace Hotel & swim club. There are also discounts on service from, CD
Forge and Music Pro ("insurance for music professionals"). This is
just to name a few of the plethora of benefits that comes with being a member
of the Recording Academy. Membership is reasonably priced at $100 per year for
voting and associated members and $30 for Grammy U (student) members.
